Move to Utah, Car 1: via Mesa Verde NP

Posted on: 21 July 2017 /
Categories: road trips, Travel

Let’s focus this post on the one car involved and the trip that brought it from Norman, Okla. home to River Heights. There are a million ways to get from Norman to Utah, that all take the same amount of time, give or take an hour. I went one I’d never gone before and that

High Uintas Ibantik Lake Hike ft. Notch

Posted on: 20 July 2017 /
Categories: Hiking, Travel

If there isn’t already a rapper named Notch, there really should be. Went on this fun, short-ish overnighter just so I could say I went on an overnighter and had been in the Uintas. The Uintas are pretty cool, or are at least pretty. I guess also cool. Man it’s been hot here in Cache

South Dakota Spring

Posted on: 19 July 2017 /
Categories: Travel

Still working on the National Park checklist. My brother was expecting to move away from western South Dakota this summer, so I figured I ought to go to Badlands NP before that happened. Right. My SIL Judie wanted to take me to see some of the other local sites first, so she tied the two

Living in Norman, Okla.: A Review

Posted on: 15 May 2017 /
Categories: Personal History, Self

About a year ago, I had a random Mormon guy I’d never met before ask me via email about what it was like living in Norman, as he was considering a job at OU. With a few edits, this was my response. Let it serve as a warning to you all. OU OU is what I’d call a

The Beard at Six Months

Posted on: 18 April 2017 /
Categories: Personal History, Self

When I interviewed at Utah State back in October, it seemed like things had gone pretty well, and I was kind of confident I’d get a job offer. So I figured I could be done interviewing and, relatedly, done having to shave. This launched me on a magical journey in which I continued to not shave (or

“Western Oklahoma’s State Park Treasures” Don’t Take Long to See

Posted on: 28 March 2017 /
Categories: road trips, Travel

As this site continues its fast descent into a straight-up travel slide-show, I post this. This was based on an article on some Oklahoma tourism website (here). I just went to the five that seemed most interesting and reasonably close-by (i.e., not to the panhandle because it’s too far, and I’d already been to that one anyway),

Fort Scott and Bleeding Southeastern Kansas

Posted on: 20 March 2017 /
Categories: Museums, road trips, Travel

On the way back from the greater Kansas City area, I stopped in Fort Scott, Kan. because there was a fort there. Do I really need to explain myself? Yes? Fine. Because there was a fort there, whatever. This was like in October or something. It was a cool fort, and everyone that ever drives

What I Did on My Winter Vacation, Part III: Copper Mountain

Posted on: 19 March 2017 /
Categories: road trips, Skiing, Travel

The drive from Monarch to Frisco and Copper Mountain was the most intense 104-mile drive of my life. It took three hours. During the trip I probably saw about five total miles of bare pavement, the rest was all ice-encrusted. I’ve been living in Oklahoma for the last three years; this was not an environment

What I Did on My Winter Vacation, Part II: Taos and Monarch

Posted on: 19 January 2017 /
Categories: Cities, road trips, Skiing, Travel

From the greater Phoenix area, I headed back the way I came, up that one highway that probably has a number toward Holbrook. It was still pretty: Although it also spat snow somewhere in those mountains, a true harbinger of the two weeks to come. Which is good, since I cannot abide a false harbinger.

What I Did on My Winter Vacation, Part I: Arizona

Posted on: 18 January 2017 /
Categories: road trips, Travel

Now that I’ve accepted a new job starting next summer, it’s my stated goal to minimize the amount of time I spend in Oklahoma. Sorry, Oklahoma. To that end, though, I spent most of the winter break in Other States. First up: I’m not sure which state I should list as first. I got in
