Animals Animals Animals Animals Animals Everywhere

Also in Southern Alberta. My bear tally for the trip is up to three now. Everyone loves bears. I’m not sure why everyone loves bears so much. It occurred to me this morning, after seeing a bear, that bears are like the polynesians of the animal world in that: They’re big. They’re playful. If you

Crypt Lake Hike: A Study in Group Dynamics (and Fear)

Posted on: 10 August 2011 /
Categories: Hiking, road trips

I didn’t actually study group dynamics while on the hike, but it sure lends itself to some theorizing. Crypt Lake, then. This is sort of THE HIKE at Waterton Lakes. It’s the Half Dome of the place. I suppose you don’t *have to* do it, but then again you don’t *have to* hike Half Dome

Waterton Lake Townsite

Posted on: 9 August 2011 /

First stop in Canada other than the bathroom just on the other side of the border crossing: Waterton Lakes National Park of Canada. Not sure why they have to have the “of Canada” in there. Seems like the location’s coordinates would imply as much. Waterton Lakes is sort of a National Park after the old-school

Custer’s Last Stand, My First Stop

Posted on: 8 August 2011 /

Which is a little misleading in that I stopped in Chicago and spent the night at my brother’s place, then stopped the next night in Spearfish, So. Dak. and stayed at my other brother’s place. I also stopped at some gas stations, some fast food restaurants, and bought a new tail light off of Amazon.

A Map of a Canadian Rockies Road Trip

Posted on: 25 July 2011 /
Categories: road trips, Travel

For no particular reason whatsoever. None. I figure four weeks or so. Maybe four and a half. Man, but the middle of the country is boring, though. Just looking at that long, straight-ish line makes me shudder. If you ask me, we should collapse the middle of the country. My brother and his family can

Safety Razor vs. Normal Razor: A Comparison (and Review Sort Of)

Posted on: 24 July 2011 /
Categories: Other

A few months ago I went to Target to buy blades for my Gilette Fusion electro-manual razor only to realize that an 8-pack cost $32. Holy carp: that’s ridiculous. I came home bladeless yet determined to find some way to get over on the man. Going to Amazon showed that blades could be had somewhat

Back of House (More Landscaping)

This isn’t done yet, but nothing ever is. Before and after. The gray things are what was in there for edging. They’re concrete cylinders. They’ll be replaced, maybe just by (normal) bricks. Also: need to pick up another three violets and another Russian sage, I guess. What’s in there: 1x Wichita Blue juniper 2x “Cascade” azalea 2x

Foundation Painting and Front Yard Planting: An Update

Posted on: 25 June 2011 /
Categories: Home Renovation

May 2010: March 2011: June 22, 2011: Most notable, of course, is the primer that spilled onto the driveway. I’ll enjoy putting an asphalt patch on top of that. Here’s an up-close of the side yard in case anyone cares: How many differences can you find? More to come — later. bkd Answers: Painted the

Painting and Carpeting the Front Porch

Posted on: 24 June 2011 /
Categories: Home Renovation

One of the other positive outcomes of my trip to Utah was having TB tell me, without prompting, that Brian P. had tried for weeks to get the many layers of old paint off of his front porch and eventually failed, gave up, and put a whole ‘nother coat of paint on top of it.

Coyote Gulch Hike Featuring Jacob Hamblin Arch, An Overnighter

Posted on: 15 May 2011 /
Categories: Hiking

We set off from the Hurricane Wash trailhead and did the hike as an out-and-back overnighter, camping near the Jacob Hamblin Arch. The most inspiring scenery of the hike (the series of high-walled amphitheaters that curve overhead) is hard to photograph. Hiking to the arch and back from Hurricane Wash would be very doable as
