Keller’s Drive-In in Dallas: the 10th-Best Hamburger in the Country

Posted on: 3 October 2008 /
Categories: Travel

The seminal work on the subject, of course, being this article in GQ. Maybe seminal. Regardless, it’s the list I’m using to define requirements on my quest to eat all 20 of the country’s most necessary hamburgers. Been working on it for a few years and have, now, eaten two of the 20. Slow and

This article r0x0rz (as do many of their articles). Much praise. Although it seems to indicate that I should have kept FictionMock going. bkd (Here’s a good FictionMock sample…)

Bail

The case against the bailout (or a case): http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/29/miron.bailout/index.html I suppose the upside of all this is that at least the presidential election is starting to focus on things that matter. Of course it doesn’t help that both candidates agree on the same mid-bellcurve policies of failure. Oh well — maybe next time. Political failure

Remaining Life Goals

As if I’ve ever made a list before. The list is kind of restricted to stuff I feel like I control well enough to make happen also. Just FWIW. The three-month, 15,000-mile road trip. Become functionally fluent in at least one more language. Spend at least a(nother) year living in a foreign country. Get five

Criteria for Determining My New Home Town

Posted on: 14 September 2008 /

Not outrageously expensive to buy a home; national average would be a good fit — a real estate market conforming to fundamental values would be a huge, huge plus. Traffic isn’t a disincentive to do things. Low average tax rate. Relatively respectful of the second amendment. A lot of easily-accessible, worthwhile, pretty outdoor opportunities (mountains,

Please Stop Remembering 9/11

I got to work this morning, saw that the flag was at half-mast, realized why it was at half-mast, then had to check myself to avoid vomiting. The people that died in those attacks was one of the lesser tragedies of that day (and the number of deaths, as I’ve detailed sort of inadvertently in

Trip to Yankee Stadium (Before It Was Too Late)

Posted on: 9 September 2008 /
Categories: Sports, Travel

All the convenience of a stadium built in 1923 with all the charm of one built in 1976. The building itself seemed unfortunate. Was there back in June and, yes, am just now getting around to saying anything about it. Watched the Yankees play the Reds. I gave up Yankee-hating a few years ago and

Top 5 Reggae Songs Ever

Because I’m so unqualified to even have an opinion. But partly also because I think it’s important that the world know that I don’t like Bob Marley as much as everyone else in the world does. So there. And I don’t get what anyone sees in Peter Tosh. Probably need to smoke weed to truly

Cross-Country Road Trip Itinerary 2.0: 3 Months of Car Camping!

Posted on: 7 September 2008 /
Categories: Travel

A follow-up to my initial cross-country road trip plans. Been thinking about this a little bit more and I figure, yes, three months is the right length. Maybe 3.5. I mean, if I don’t suffer due to the length and squalor, I haven’t really accomplished what I set out to do, right? Which brings me

Biking through the Marguerite Triangle

Posted on: 3 September 2008 /
Categories: Other

There’s this one spot on Marguerite Parkway where, when heading southbound, my bike’s speedometer just stops working. All instruments register zero. They don’t blink, just — the speedo stops recognizing that the bike is moving. Only happens the one direction and not the other. Between La Barca and Olympiad. It’s pleasantly unnerving. And I suppose
